Family

Mukesh Ambani was born into a Gujrati Hindu family. His father, Dhirubhai Ambani decided to move back to India in 1958 to start a trading business, which focused on textiles and spices. His mother Kokilaben Ambani was a Gujrati. He has a younger brother named, Anil Ambani and two sisters, named Nina Bhadrashyam Kothari and Dipti Dattaraj Salgaonkar. After the family moved to India, their financial condition slightly improved. Later, Dhirubhai purchased a 14 floor apartment block called as ‘Sea Wind’ in Colaba, Mumbai. Ambani and his brother lived in this building on different floors.

Education & Qualification

Ambani and his friend Anand Jain together attended the Hill Grange High School at Peddar Road, Mumbai. Anand Jain is like a brother to Ambani and later, he became a close associate to him. He studied at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai after the secondary schooling. Then, he received a BE degree in chemical engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology.

Later, Ambani enrolled for an MBA at the Stanford University but withdrew in 1980 to help his father in building Reliance. At that time, Reliance was still a small but fast growing enterprise. His father called him back to India so that he could gain some experience, as Dhirubhai believed that skills are obtained by some real life experiences and not by sitting in a classroom. If all of us were like his father then… imagine the world that would be!

Ambani was influenced by his teachers William F. Sharpe and Man Mohan Sharma because they are “the kind of professors who made you think out of the box”. All of us have met these kind of teachers at some point in our life, right?

Career

Mukesh Ambani set up Reliance Infocomm Limited, which is now known as Reliance Communications Limited. At the age of 24, Ambani was given charge of the construction of Patalganga petrochemical plant. The company was heavily investing in the oil refinery and petrochemicals at that time.

Ambani directed and led the creation of the world’s largest grassroots petroleum refinery at Jamnagar, India. It could produce 660,000 barrels per day, which means 33 million tonnes per year in 2010. In December 2013 Ambani announced the possibility of a “collaborative venture” with Bharti Airtel in setting up digital infrastructure for the 4G network in India. On 18 June 2014, Mukesh Ambani said that he will invest Rs 1.8 trillion across business in the next three years and launch 4G broadband services in 2015. In 2016, Ambani was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering for  engineering and business leadership in oil refineries, petrochemical products.

In 2008, Ambani purchased the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians for $ 111.9 million. For this, he was titled as “The World’s Richest Sports Team Owner“. Well…That’s quite a discovery know? And he is the founder of the Indian Super League, a football league in India. In 2012, Forbes named Ambani as one of the richest sports owners in the world. Yup.. Personal Life

Mukesh Ambani met Nita after his father attended a dance performance, which nita took part in. Ambani married Nita Ambani in 1985. They have two sons namely, Akash Ambani and Anant Ambani. They also have a daughter, named Isha Ambani, who is Anant’s twin.

Ambani live with his family in Antilia, a private 27-storey building in Mumbai whose value was USD 4.6 billion in 2023 and it was the most expensive private residence in the world at the time it was built. The building requires a staff of 600 for maintenance, and it includes three helipads, a 160-car garage, private movie theatre, swimming pool, and fitness centre. Woah! That’s amazing right?!

In 2007, Ambani gifted his wife a $ 60 million Airbus A319 for her 44th birthday. It has been custom-fitted to include a living room, bedroom, satellite television, Wi-Fi, skybars, showers, and an office. She is so lucky to receive a gift like that. Oh wait.. she’s lucky because she is married to the wealthiest person of Asia, right?

In early 2019, a court in Mumbai held his younger brother, Anil Ambani, in criminal contempt for non-payment of personally guaranteed debt Reliance Communications owed to Swedish gear maker Ericsson. Instead of putting him in a jail, the court gave Anil a month to come up with the funds. When the month ended, Mukesh bailed out his younger brother and paid the debt.

On 25 February, 2021 a green Mahindra Scorpio SUV containing 20 gelignite(a substance, used for explosions) sticks was found outside the residence of Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai. In 2023, he received a death threat via email. Kind of.. scary know?
