Bill Gates is a worldwide American businessman, with great leadership skills. He is an investor, philanthropist, writer and the co-founder of Microsoft, which is the world’s largest personal computer software company, along with his childhood friend Allen Paul. When he was young, his parents wanted him to pursue his career in law but he was always influenced by his passion for technology. Gates was fascinated by the machines and that how it would execute the perfect software code.

In March 2020, Gates left his board position in Microsoft Company and Berkshire Hathaway, to focus on his philanthropist efforts on global health, development and education. He has donated a great amount of money to many charitable organizations and scientific research programs to help them. Personally, Bill Gates suggests that one should emulate the philanthropic efforts of the Salwen family, who sold their home and gave away half of its value, as described in their book, The Power of Half.

Family

Bill Gates was born on 28 October, 1955 in Seattle, Washington DC in USA. He is the only son of his father, William H. Gates Sr. and his first wife, Mary Maxwell Gates. His father was a prominent lawyer and his mother was a board member of First Interstate BancSystem & United Way of America.

Gates also has an older sister Kristi and a younger sister Libby. Although, he is the fourth of his name in the family, but has a suffix “III” in his name because his father had a suffix “II” in their name. He lived in the Sand Point area of Seattle with his family but their house was destroyed by a rare tornado when he was only 7 years old. Gates was bullied as a child.

Education & Qualification

Bill Gates was small for his and was often bullied in his school. He wrote his first software program in the private Lakeside prep school, when he was 13. At age 17, Gates formed a venture with Allen called Traf-O-Data to make traffic counters based on the Intel 8008 processor. He gave Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), in which he scored 1590 out of 1600 and enrolled into Harvard college in the year 1973 but dropped out after two years only. At Harvard, he met his fellow student and future Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer who later graduated magna cum laude and became the second CEO of Microsoft, succeeding Gates.

Personal Life

Bill Gates is an eager reader. His interest also lies in Golf and Tennis. His days are always planned minute-by-minute on a regular basis, just like the U.S. president’s schedule. In 2016, he revealed that he was color-blind.

On 1 January, 1994, Gates married Melinda French on the Hawaiian Island of Lanai. The couple has three children namely, Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe. Gates announced that they had decided to divorce after 27 years of marriage and 34 years as a couple on 3rd May, 2021. It was also mentioned that they would keep working together for charitable efforts.

Bill Gates first contacted Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) and informed that he and others were working on a BASIC interpreter for their platform. But in reality, Gates and Allen had not written any code for it. They just wanted to get MITS’s interest and the president of MITS platform agreed to meet them for a demonstration, which was held at MITS’s office in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Allen named their partnership “Micro-soft”, which is a combination of “microcomputer” and “software”. Their first office was in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the first employee they hired was their high school collaborator Ric Weiland. Gates and Allen dropped the hyphen (-) within a year and officially registered their trade name as “Microsoft”.

On 20 November, 1985 Microsoft and Gates launched the first retail version of Microsoft Windows. When Gates stepped down as the CEO of Microsoft, one year after that WindowsXP was released.
