Gautam Buddha and Angulimaal
Hundreds of people were murdered by a dacoit named Angulimaal in the kingdom of Kosala during the time of Lord Buddha. He earned the name “Angulimaal” because he routinely cut off fingers of a lot of people and wore them as a garland. He was notorious for his brutality and killing many people. Everyone used to avoid the part of the jungle where Angulimaal had been seen for fear of facing him. The King sent his soldiers many times to catch him, but they were unsuccessful.
Once upon a time, Lord Buddha was supposed to travel to the part where Angulimaal Used to live. All the people requested Buddha not to travel that route. But Buddha knew that Angulimaal still had mercy and compassion; all that was needed was for those feelings to be awakened. With this thinking Buddha went where Angulimaal was living. Many people warned Buddha against continuing on this path, yet he went to that place.
Angulimaal drew his sword as he saw Buddha approaching, but Buddha kept walking at his own speed. When Angulmaal cried, “Stay down!” at Buddha, the Buddha immediately stopped without any aggression or fear and with a sweet smile.
When Angulimaal arrived, Lord Buddha said, “I have stayed, but when will you stay?” You also stop from sinning, that’s why I have come here so that you too should follow the path of truth. Virtues are still alive in you. Give some time to yourself to feel your virtues, and you’ll feel a difference. Angulimaal was asked by the Lord Buddha to break off a branch from the tree and bring it to him. Angulimaal cut off a branch and took it to the Buddha. Buddha asked him to add it back to the tree now.
Angulimaal said in disbelief, “How is this even possible?” It is impossible to add this branch back to the tree. Buddha told “If you can’t join it, you have no right to break it. Buddha’s words had a great impact on him. The sound of this caused Angulimaal’s hair to stand. The impact of Buddha’s teachings on him was substantial. When he heard the Lord Buddha speak and saw him, he felt a chill run down his spine.
Weeping, he threw himself at the feet of the Buddha. It was the first time, he said, that anyone had spoken to him with such affection, and he politely apologized. Angulimaal requested Please pardon me and accept me as one of your followers. I’m prepared to take this discipline and happiness. He threw his finger garland.
At the same time, he decided to become a monk and, not long after, he too had reached the level of Arhat. He, too, had taken up the Buddha’s teachings of truth and love.

भगवान बुद्ध के समय में कोशल राज्य में अंगुलिमाल नाम के डाकू ने सैकड़ों लोगों की हत्या कर दी थी। उन्होंने “अंगुलिमाल” नाम कमाया क्योंकि वह नियमित रूप से लोगों को मार कर उनकी उँगलियाँ गले में माला के रूप में पहन लेता था । वह अपनी क्रूरता और कई लोगों की हत्या के लिए कुख्यात था। जंगल के उस भाग से जहाँ अंगुलिमाल को देखा जाता था, सब उसके सामने आने के डर से भाग जाते थे। राजा ने उसे पकड़ने के लिए कई बार अपने सैनिक भेजे, पर वे असफल रहे।
एक बार की बात है, भगवान बुद्ध को उस भाग की यात्रा करनी थी जहाँ अंगुलिमाल रहा करते थे। सभी लोगों ने बुद्ध से उस मार्ग की यात्रा न करने का अनुरोध किया। लेकिन बुद्ध जानते थे कि अंगुलिमाल में अभी भी दया और करुणा है; बस जरूरत थी उन भावनाओं को जगाने की। यह सोचकर बुद्ध वहां गए जहां अंगुलिमाल रह रहे थे। कई लोगों ने बुद्ध को इस मार्ग पर न चलने की चेतावनी दी, फिर भी वे उस स्थान पर चले गए।
बुद्ध को पास आते देख अंगुलिमाल ने तलवार खींच ली, लेकिन बुद्ध अपनी गति से चलते रहे। जब अंगुलमल रोया, “नीचे रहो!” बुद्ध पर, बुद्ध तुरंत बिना किसी आक्रामकता या भय के और एक प्यारी सी मुस्कान के साथ रुक गए।
अंगुलिमाल के आने पर भगवान बुद्ध ने कहा, “मैं ठहर गया, पर तुम कब रहोगे?” तुम भी पाप करना बंद करो, इसलिए मैं यहां इसलिए आया हूं कि तुम भी सत्य के मार्ग पर चलो। आप में गुण अभी भी जीवित हैं। अपनी खूबियों को महसूस करने के लिए खुद को कुछ समय दें और आप फर्क महसूस करेंगे।
अंगुलिमाल को भगवान बुद्ध ने पेड़ से एक शाखा तोड़कर अपने पास लाने को कहा। अंगुलिमाल ने एक शाखा काट दी और उसे बुद्ध के पास ले गया। बुद्ध ने उससे कहा कि अब इसे फिर से वृक्ष में जोड़ दो।
अंगुलिमाल ने अविश्वास से कहा, “यह कैसे संभव है?” इस शाखा को वापस पेड़ से जोड़ना असंभव है। बुद्ध ने कहा “यदि आप इसमें शामिल नहीं हो सकते हैं, तो आपको इसे तोड़ने का कोई अधिकार नहीं है।
बुद्ध की बातों का उन पर बहुत प्रभाव पड़ा। इस आवाज से अंगुलिमाल के रोंगटे खड़े हो गए। उन पर बुद्ध की शिक्षाओं का प्रभाव काफी था। जब उन्होंने भगवान बुद्ध को बोलते हुए सुना और उन्हें देखा, तो उन्हें लगा कि उनकी रीढ़ में ठंडक दौड़ रही है।
रोते-रोते वह बुद्ध के चरणों में गिर पड़ा। उन्होंने कहा, यह पहली बार था कि किसी ने उनसे इतने प्यार से बात की थी और उन्होंने विनम्रता से माफी मांगी।
अंगुलिमाल ने अनुरोध किया कि कृपया मुझे क्षमा करें और मुझे अपने अनुयायियों में से एक के रूप में स्वीकार करें। मैं इस अनुशासन और खुशी को लेने के लिए तैयार हूं। उसने अपनी अंगुली की माला फेंक दी।
उसी समय, उन्होंने एक साधु बनने का फैसला किया और कुछ ही समय बाद, वह भी अर्हत के स्तर तक पहुँच गए थे। उन्होंने भी, बुद्ध की सत्य और प्रेम की शिक्षाओं को ग्रहण किया था।
